Shaw Floors

Creating the metaverse for fiber manufacturing skills

Shaw Industries Group, Inc. is one of the world’s largest carpet manufacturers with more than $6 billion in annual revenue and approximately 22,000 employees worldwide. HyperSkill enables Shaw Industries to create the metaverse for job skills in the fiber production industry. When the job requires psychomotor skills, HyperSkill enables HTC Vive trackers to be attached to tools so that trainees feel the weight of the part and build muscle memory. When a less expensive headset will suffice, HyperSkill enables the customer to use the cheaper device, without having to recreate the entire simulation.

Shaw Floors is a leading flooring manufacturer and distributor based in Dalton, Georgia, United States. The company was founded in 1946 and has since grown to become one of the largest flooring providers in North America, with a wide range of products including carpet, hardwood, laminate, tile, and luxury vinyl. Shaw Floors is known for its commitment to sustainability and has implemented a number of eco-friendly practices, such as using recycled materials in its products and reducing energy consumption in its manufacturing processes.

Overview of Simulations

New worker onboarding training

The objective of this VR simulation is to train new workers on the production processes. Users are instructed on how to go through the entire string up process for the 5S+ machine. This is a long process in a noisy environment where waste is constantly being generated. By virtualizing this process Shaw was able to instruct potential new hires in a risk free environment with no waste generation while learning and give a clear step by step process that users could repeat at their own pace. They were then assessed based on their efforts and given a score which they could compare against their fellow users. All user actions were recorded and potential waste generation was sent for review by administrators of the program.

Twisting - Bucket

The objective of this simulation is to instruct the user through the twisting process of a textile machine. This process is one of 4 common tasks that individuals at the Shaw TN plant do on a daily basis. This process is one of two that SimInsights simulated and involves working with the lower section of the machine. These tasks primarily involve replacing the string package in the lower bucket and the primary points of failure to watch out for while working with the package. These simulations are authored in both English and Spanish.

Twisting - Creeling

The objective of this simulation is to instruct the user through the twisting process of a textile machine. This process is one of 4 common tasks that individuals at the Shaw TN plant do on a daily basis. This process is one of two that SimInsights simulated and involves working with the upper section of the machine. These tasks primarily involve replacing the string package in the upper arm and the primary points of failure to watch out for while working with the package. These multilingual simulations are authored in both English and Spanish.
